Mithila is a researcher, textile artist, and designer currently based in Helsinki, Finland. Growing up in India, engulfed by a plethora of art forms and handicrafts, the love affair with textiles was inevitable. She draws inspiration from traditional craft techniques, nature, literature, and childhood memories. Mithila holds a Master’s degree in Fashion, Clothing, and Textile Design from Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture in Finland. Presently she works as a researcher and designer for Multifunctional Material Design, focusing on developing novel textile actuators at Aalto University School of Chemical Engineering.
In her work, she challenges the established textiles design practices and aspires to blur the boundaries of traditional craft, design, and emerging technologies. A weaver at heart, her practice reflects a reverence for material experimentation and exploration. She perceives textiles as a medium of artistic expression that stems from methodological research and investigation as well as serendipitous accidents. In her current practice, she focuses on creating sculptural woven fabrics integrated with smart materials that can take a life of itself, respond to environmental stimuli, and play a functional role outside of the traditional textile realm.
